THEORIES AND MODELS OF DEVELOPMENT

This course focuses on the analysis and discussion of the most important issues around the notions of modernization and progress. It will review topics on the main conceptions and models of development, with special emphasis on the interrelationships of human beings with the environment and among human. It will provide the contrasting worldview of western thought with those of indigenous communities.

The globalization process and its impacts on the local communities is also reviewed with the support of qualified Ecuadorian Professors. The course reviews the most recent literature (about 70 pages per week). Two field observations allow the students to have direct exposure of some of the main issues discussed in the program. The students are expected to write a term paper and make a final oral presentation of their findings. Group work is highly encouraged.
