This course analyses and discusses some of the basis principles, patterns and contradictions of Latin American development, with a special emphasis of Ecuador. It provides the opportunity to understand the complexity of Latin American development and its environmental and social consequences, with direct exposure to different realities, under the guidance of qualified Latin American specialists.

Faculty and students identify the most important interrelationships of socio- economic development, environmental changes, and the social and health impacts on different population groups.

The course reviews the most recent literature (about 70 pages per week). Three field observations allow the students to make direct observations of the impact of the agricultural modernization, industrial and urban development, and the newly emerging production for exportation. The students are expected to write a term paper and make a final oral presentation of their findings. Group work is highly encouraged. The course is conducted completely in Spanish.
