Community Epidemiological Surveillance System (CESSY)

SIVEC

Pedro Moncayo County, Province of Pichincha 2001- Actually
This project is concerned with the development of a Community Epidemiological Surveillance System (SIVEC), which is a technological tool used for planning and is based on the Geographical Information System (GIS) data. These systems allow for the collection and systematization of information (i.e. demographic, health, socio-economic, cultural, infrastructural, and environmental) at the household, community, county, and province levels; thereby helping to identify the needs of the community, identify and prioritize the groups at risk, define possible low-cost interventions, and monitor and evaluate the impact of these interventions. This will in turn demonstrate that in situations of economic crisis, the transfer of knowledge and technology can assist in the empowerment of the affected communities by improving their capacity to monitor changes, define short and long-term intervention plans, and ultimately to more efficiently employ the limited community resources for the improvement of the state of health and living conditions.
